An OPEN Letter To Siargao – Kaete Cortez

It was in December of 2019 when I first set my foot on your beautiful island. I still vividly remember every single moment in you with precise detail. I mean, how could I not when A LOT happened from the moment I planned to visit you to the day I left your beauty?

My week on you was not what I imagined and planned, but it was perfect. Your sublime island witnessed the dumbest and happiest version of me. It was on your island that I got “warnings” but ignored it anyway. It started there, and my friends can attest to that, and for that, I thought I lost myself in your paradise. Looking back, I realized I wasn’t lost, but instead, I bizarrely met my bravest self when I was there. In you, I took chances. I unnaturally brushed off plans. I let myself become lethargic for a while. I became nonchalant.

You have offered me the peace I never knew existed. You taught me to live life spontaneously, and because of you, I learned that life could offer you great things even if it is unplanned. Now, I fully understand why many people want to stay and live on your island, and I can’t blame them. Who wouldn’t want to wake up in a stress-free life in a paradise? I, for one, want to place my solitude in you.

Remembering every moment in you brings so much joy and pain to my heart. But believe me, you have an exceptional place in my heart, and I have always longed for you. I hope and pray to see you again, stay longer than usual. I will not waste a single moment. I want to feel the peace you bring in me and your fine white sand under my feet once more.

Nevertheless, you will still be my favorite island, next to my home province, and I would definitely, go back to you, not to reminisce the past but to create new memories.

Karajaw, Siargao! I love everything about you. You are beyond beautiful. Para kang SMART. . . .kasi you are simply amazing!

Much Love,
