For his gold and silver medal finish in the 2021 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Carlos Yulo will receive P750,000 from the Philippine Sports Commission.

With the amount, Yulo could buy a lot of the stuff that he wants.

But what did the 21 year-old gymnast look for after winning his two medals? Pizza.

According to Chino Trinidad’s report on 24 Oras on Tuesday, Yulo waited for almost two years to taste a slice of pizza.

“Di ko nagustuhan ‘yung isa, seafood kasi,” Yulo said when asked about the pizza. “Pero ‘yung isang may chicken, masarap.”

(I did not like the other flavor because it’s seafood, but I like the one with chicken. It tastes good.)

But more than the thought of post-competition pizza, it was his failed medal bid in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that fueled Yulo to perform well in these world championships.

“Hindi siya maalis sa isip ko eh ‘yung…grabe, natalo ako sa sarili ko doon,” Yulo said. “Pero siyempre di ako puwede magpabaya rin. Ayokong hindi ibigay lahat tapos pupunta ako sa world championships kaya minake sure ko na preparado ako.”

(I couldn’t get it out of my head that I defeated myself at the time, but of course I can’t be negligent. I didn’t want to not give it all then I’ll go to the world championships, that’s why I made sure I was prepared.)

Yulo won the gold medal in the vault finals of the gymnastics championships and the silver in the parallel bars. He failed to defend his title in the floor exercise, where he finished fifth.
