Sudden rains early Tuesday caused massive flooding in several parts of the country causing heavy traffic in some areas and class suspensions in Malabon City.

(At around 5 a.m., my grandchildren were getting ready to go to school when it started to rain heavily. When they entered the school after 30 minutes, the class was suspended and we picked them up again.)

“Mabilis naman humupa yung tubig pagka nagbabaha katulad niyan mataas po yan kanina,” resident Jessie Baylon said.

(The water recedes quickly despite the flooding.)

Meanwhile, some vehicles had difficulty crossing the roads in Koronadal City due to the severe flooding.

According to weather bureau PAGASA, this signifies the possible start of the rainy season.

(Based on PAGASA’s monitoring, the so-called southwesterly wind flow is already here, so this is the beginning of when the southwest monsoon will prevail in the next couple of weeks. This is the so-called onset of the rainy season.)

Heavy rains are expected in the coming weeks, especially in the western section of Luzon.

The weather bureau also encouraged the public to prepare as heavy rains are expected due to the effects of El Niño in the coming months.

(Because during El Niño, the temperature of the Pacific Ocean is warm, which means it is favorable for tropical cyclone formation. If we go back to the time of Ondoy and Pepeng that was alson during El Niño. So, I hope it doesn’t happen, but there is a possibility that upcoming storms will be similar to that.) —Richa Noriega/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
