Tropical Depression Emong passed very close to Sabtang and Batan Islands as Signal No. 1 remained hoisted over three areas in Northern Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday.

In its 8 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA still raised Signal No. 1 over Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga) including Babuyan Islands.

Emong was last spotted at 90 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes, moving northwestward at 50 kilometers per hour (kph).

The weather disturbance is packing 55 kph maximum sustained winds and 70kph gustiness.

Due to its impact, Emong is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains over Batanes and Babyan Islands starting Monday night until Tuesday morning.

State meteorologists said they expect the tropical depression to leave Philippine jurisdiction this Monday evening or Tuesday night.

“Emong may intensify into a tropical storm within the next 12 hours. It will then weaken into tropical depression as it makes landfall over Guangdong Province, China and remnant low as it moves further inland,” PAGASA also said. —NB, GMA News
