“Maring” has intensified into a “large” tropical storm hovering over Philippine Sea, PAGASA said in its 11 p.m. weather bulletin Friday.

The center of Maring was estimated at 715 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar or 790 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar.

It has a maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center, gustiness of up to 80 kph and central pressure of 998 hPa.

The storm is moving east northeastward at 15 kph.  PAGASA said to expect “strong winds or higher extend outwards up to 600 km from the center.”

No tropical cyclone wind signal is currently in effect, the state weather bureau added.

From Friday night through Saturday evening, moderate to heavy rains are possible over Eastern Visayas and Caraga. Light to moderate with at times heavy rains are also possible over Bicol Region, and Cebu, Bohol, PAGASA said.

Beginning Saturday afternoon or evening, light to moderate with at times heavy rains may begin affecting Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and the rest of Visayas as the southwesterly wind flow enhanced by Maring begins to affect
these areas.

PAGASA said that under these conditions, isolated scattered flooding, including flash floods and rain-induced landslides are possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps

The weather bureau added that due to the expansive wind field of the tropical storm, occasionally gusts reaching strong breeze to near gale in
strength may still be experienced over Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon even in the absence of a wind signal.

The next weather bulletin will be issued at 5 a.m. Saturday.—LDF, GMA News
