A man found to have stolen around ten mountain bicycles in Talisay City, Cebu Province was arrested on January 30, 2024.
Alberto Deriada, 29 years old, from Bacolod City, and is residing temporarily in Talisay, was caught on camera stealing a bike inside a subdivision in Barangay Pooc at around 3 a.m. of January 29, 2024.
The suspect was found to have stolen bikes repeatedly in the subdivision.
Deriada admitted to stealing the pricey bikes and pawning the items after he lost his job as an attendant in a store of poultry feeds.
He said his live-in partner has forced him to steal bikes so he could hand in money to her.
The police took Deriada to the pawnshop to have the items recovered.
However, only two of ten mountain bikes were recovered.
The stolen bikes were pawned for P2,000 and P3,000. The bikes were estimated to be worth P30,000 and P40,000, respectively.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak sought comment from the manager of the pawnshop but was refused an interview.
Police Lt. Col. Wayne Magbanua, chief of the Talisay City Police, called on victims of bike theft to report to their office. Magbanua shared that the security guard of the subdivision knew of the incidents of bike theft in a span of two months, but failed to report these to the police. —GMA Regional TV
