Philippine National Police chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar on Monday said six cops from the Manila Police District have been arrested after they allegedly extorted money from curfew violators.

In a statement, Eleazar said he already ordered the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) to investigate the incident in preparation for administrative charges that may be filed against the MPD personnel.

“I commend the Manila Police District for acting on the complaint of extortion that led to the arrest of these six policemen,” Eleazar said.

The PNP said the six police officers—with ranks of patrolman, police staff sergeant, and police corporal—allegedly extorted money from two curfew violators whom they apprehended on Luzon Street on Thursday.

A tube pipe or an alleged drug paraphernalia was seized from the curfew violators but no illegal drugs was confiscated, according to the PNP.

One of the arrested curfew violators was a chairman of the Sangguniang Kabataan, the PNP added.

The cops brought the violators to the Padre Algue Police Community Precinct where the cops allegedly asked money from them in exchange for their freedom.

According to the PNP, the violators raised P47,000 by supposedly pawning their motorcycle and a gold necklace.

When they were released, the two reported the alleged extortion to other police officers.

The accused cops were disarmed and slapped with criminal charges for robbery extortion, the PNP said.

“Both administrative and criminal cases would be filed against these policemen depending on the outcome of the investigation,” Eleazar said. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
